A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in MediaWiki up to 1.18.1 (Content Management System). Affected is an unknown functionality of the component User Blocking. The manipulation as part of a Image-Tag leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-352. Multiple cross-site request forgery (CSRF) vulnerabilities in MediaWiki 1.17.x before 1.17.3 and 1.18.x before 1.18.2 allow remote attackers to hijack the authentication of users with the block permission for requests that (1) block a user via a request to the Block module or (2) unblock a user via a request to the Unblock module.
The weakness was presented 03/22/2012 by Brion Vibber (Krenair) as not defined mailinglist post (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.wikimedia.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-1578 since 03/12/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The successful exploitation needs a authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58965 (MediaWiki < 1.17.3 / 1.18.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
Upgrading to version 1.17.3 or 1.18.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
