A vulnerability was found in MediaWiki up to 1.18.1 (Content Management System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function mt_rand. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:

MediaWiki 1.17.x before 1.17.3 and 1.18.x before 1.18.2 uses weak random numbers for password reset tokens, which makes it easier for remote attackers to change the passwords of arbitrary users.

The weakness was disclosed 03/22/2012 by George Argyros and Aggelos Kiayias (Bawolff) as confirmed mailinglist post (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.wikimedia.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-1581 since 03/12/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
