A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component Browser Engine. Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in the browser engine in Mozilla Firefox before 3.0.14 and 3.5.x before 3.5.3, Thunderbird before 2.0.0.24, and SeaMonkey before 1.1.19 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors related to the BinHex decoder in netwerk/streamconv/converters/nsBinHexDecoder.cpp, and unknown vectors.
The weakness was shared 09/10/2009 by Juan Pablo Lopez Yacubian (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as Bug 508074 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-3072. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40932 (CentOS 4 / 5 : firefox / seamonkey (CESA-2009:1430)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119088 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2009:1430)).
Upgrading to version 2.0 8 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11658.
