Nlnetlabs Unbound up to 1.3.3 cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Nlnetlabs Unbound and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Unbound before 1.3.4 does not properly verify signatures for NSEC3 records, which allows remote attackers to cause secure delegations to be downgraded via DNS spoofing or other DNS-related attacks in conjunction with crafted delegation responses.

The weakness was presented 10/07/2009 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xforce.iss.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-3602. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44828 (Debian DSA-1963-1 : unbound - cryptographic implementation error), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165243 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2010:005)).

Upgrading to version 0.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (53729), Tenable (44828), SecurityFocus (BID 37459†), OSVDB (58836†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-24600†).
