A vulnerability classified as critical was found in RealNetworks Helix Server up to 14.3.x. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component master.exe. The manipulation as part of a TCP Packets leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
RealNetworks Helix Server and Helix Mobile Server 14.x before 14.3.x store passwords in cleartext under adm_b_db\users\, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information by reading a database.
The weakness was presented 04/02/2012 by Dmitriy Pletnev (Agent) with Microsoft Vulnerability Research (Website). The advisory is shared for download at helixproducts.real.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-1923 since 03/27/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 251 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58724 (RealNetworks Helix Server 14.x < 14.3.x Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc..
Upgrading to version 14.3.x eliminates this vulnerability.Proper firewalling of tcp/705 is able to address this issue. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12923.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (74673), Tenable (58724), SecurityFocus (BID 52929†), OSVDB (81055†) and Secunia (SA45414†). See VDB-5066, VDB-5067, VDB-5069 and VDB-5070 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
