MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.7 numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos (Network Authentication Software). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component Kerberos. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple integer underflows in the (1) AES and (2) RC4 decryption functionality in the crypto library in MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) 1.3 through 1.6.3, and 1.7 before 1.7.1, allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code by providing ciphertext with a length that is too short to be valid.

The weakness was disclosed 01/13/2010 as Bug 545015 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-4212. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 04/13/2025).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67984 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : krb5 (ELSA-2010-0029)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216010 (VMWare ESXi 4.1.0 Patch Release ESXi410-201010001 Missing (KB1027753)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (67984), SecurityFocus (BID 37749†), Secunia (SA38140†), SecurityTracker (ID 1023440†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-24597†). The entries VDB-3948, VDB-47630, VDB-47629 and VDB-53257 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
