Linux Kernel 2.6.23 put_pid privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.23 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function put_pid. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The release_one_tty function in drivers/char/tty_io.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.34-rc4 omits certain required calls to the put_pid function, which has unspecified impact and local attack vectors.

The issue has been introduced in 10/09/2007. The weakness was disclosed 04/20/2010 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-1162. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 924 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46725 (Debian DSA-2053-1 : linux-2.6 - privilege escalation/denial of service/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165599 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2010:031)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (57957), Tenable (46725) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-25958†). The entries VDB-48631, VDB-51485, VDB-53450 and VDB-53419 are pretty similar. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
