A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Office 2003/2007 (Office Suite Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function in the library GDI+. Heap-based buffer overflow in the Office GDI+ library in Microsoft Office 2003 SP3 and 2007 SP2 and SP3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted EMF image in an Office document, aka "GDI+ Heap Overflow Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 11/17/2003. The weakness was disclosed 05/08/2012 by iDefense Labs with iDefense Labs VCP as ms12-034 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website) via Microsoft. The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0167 since 12/13/2011. The attack can be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3095 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59042 (MS12-034: Combined Security Update for Microsoft Office, Windows, .NET Framework, and Silverlight (2681578)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90803 (Microsoft Combined Security Update for Microsoft Office, Windows, .NET Framework and Silverlight (MS12-034)).
Applying the patch MS12-MAY is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12334.
