A vulnerability has been found in Mozilla Firefox 3.6/3.6.2/3.6.3 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the file jstracer.cpp of the component Javascript Engine. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The JavaScript engine in Mozilla Firefox 3.6.x before 3.6.4 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors that trigger an assertion failure in jstracer.cpp.
The weakness was presented 06/24/2010 by David Anderson as Bug 557946 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-1203 since 03/30/2010. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 47788 (CentOS 3 / 4 : seamonkey (CESA-2010:0499)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118158 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2010:0500, RHSA-2010:0501)).
Upgrading to version 3.6.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9910.
