Details
A vulnerability was found in LibTIFF (Image Processing Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function TIFFFetchSubjectDistance of the file tif_dirread.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the TIFFFetchSubjectDistance function in tif_dirread.c in LibTIFF before 3.9.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a long EXIF SubjectDistance field in a TIFF file.
The weakness was disclosed 06/21/2010 as Bug 599576 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-2067. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75618 (openSUSE Security Update : libtiff-devel (openSUSE-SU-2010:0420-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118506 (Fedora Update for LibTIFF (FEDORA-2010-10334)).
