Details
A vulnerability has been found in LibTIFF 3.9.0/3.9.2 (Image Processing Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function TIFFYCbCrtoRGB. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The TIFFYCbCrtoRGB function in LibTIFF 3.9.0 and 3.9.2, as used in ImageMagick, does not properly handle invalid ReferenceBlackWhite values, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted TIFF image that triggers an array index error, related to "downsampled OJPEG input."
The weakness was released 07/02/2010 as Bug 583081 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-2595. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55819 (BlackBerry Enterprise Server PNG and TIFF Image Processing Vulnerabilities (KB27244)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120129 (Solaris Multiple Vulnerabilities in LibTIFF).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
