LibTIFF 3.9.0/3.9.2 tif_strip.c TIFFGetField input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in LibTIFF 3.9.0/3.9.2. This impacts the function TIFFGetField of the file tif_strip.c. The manipulation results in input validation. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-2597. There is no available exploit.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in LibTIFF 3.9.0/3.9.2 (Image Processing Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function TIFFGetField of the file tif_strip.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The TIFFVStripSize function in tif_strip.c in LibTIFF 3.9.0 and 3.9.2 makes incorrect calls to the TIFFGetField function, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted TIFF image, related to "downsampled OJPEG input" and possibly related to a compiler optimization that triggers a divide-by-zero error.

The weakness was presented 07/02/2010 by Tom Lane as Bug 603703 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-2597. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 47738 (CentOS 4 / 5 : libtiff (CESA-2010:0519)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118175 (LibTIFF Multiple Remote Denial of Service Vulnerabilities).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (47738), SecurityFocus (BID 41295†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-26528†). See VDB-53897, VDB-53931, VDB-53930 and VDB-53929 for similar entries. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
