Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in LibTIFF (Image Processing Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
LibTIFF 3.9.4 and earlier does not properly handle an invalid td_stripbytecount field, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and application crash) via a crafted TIFF file, a different vulnerability than CVE-2010-2443.
The weakness was published 07/06/2010 by Dan Rosenberg with CERT-FI as Bug 608010 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-2482. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52581 (Ubuntu 6.06 LTS / 8.04 LTS / 9.10 / 10.04 LTS / 10.10 : tiff vulnerabilities (USN-1085-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118175 (LibTIFF Multiple Remote Denial of Service Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (14573), Tenable (52581), SecurityFocus (BID 41088†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-26478†).
