Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in FreeType (Software Library). This issue affects the function FT_Stream_EnterFrame. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The FT_Stream_EnterFrame function in base/ftstream.c in FreeType before 2.4.2 does not properly validate certain position values, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted font file.
The weakness was disclosed 08/19/2010 by Robert Swiecki (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.info. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-2805 since 07/22/2010. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50636 (RHEL 6 : freetype (RHSA-2010:0864)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118377 (FreeType Compact Font Format (CFF) Multiple Stack Based Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 2.1.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (50636), SecurityFocus (BID 42285†), Secunia (SA40816†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-56230†). The entries VDB-4156, VDB-4157, VDB-54410 and VDB-54409 are pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
