bdf/bdflib.c in FreeType before 2.4.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted BDF font file, related to an attempted modification of a value in a static string.
The weakness was disclosed 08/19/2010 by Marc Deslauriers (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.launchpad.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-3053 since 08/19/2010. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75504 (openSUSE Security Update : freetype2 (openSUSE-SU-2010:0726-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165464 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for freetype2 (SUSE-SU-2012:0553-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.1.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
