A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Microsoft SharePoint Server 2007 (Groupware Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function SafeHTML of the component HTML Sanitization. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a html injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. The toStaticHTML function in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8, and the SafeHTML function in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP2, SharePoint Foundation 2010, Office SharePoint Server 2007 SP2, Groove Server 2010, and Office Web Apps, allows remote attackers to bypass the cross-site scripting (XSS) protection mechanism and conduct XSS attacks via a crafted use of the Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) @import rule, aka "HTML Sanitization Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2010-1257.
The weakness was disclosed 09/17/2010 by Mario Heiderich (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-3324. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49999 (MS10-072: Vulnerabilities in SafeHTML Could Allow Information Disclosure (2412048) (remote check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses : XSS. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100091 (Microsoft Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS10-071)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10544.
