Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 through 8 does not properly restrict script access to content from a different (1) domain or (2) zone, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information via a crafted web site, aka "Cross-Domain Information Disclosure Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was released 10/13/2010 (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-3330. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 952 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49948 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100091 (Microsoft Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS10-071)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10564.
