Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2010-2946. No exploit is available. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is integrity. CVE summarizes:

fs/jfs/xattr.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.35.2 does not properly handle a certain legacy format for storage of extended attributes, which might allow local users by bypass intended xattr namespace restrictions via an "os2." substring at the beginning of a name.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was published 09/29/2010 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-2946. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1654 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51953 (SuSE9 Security Update : the Linux kernel (YOU Patch Number 12672)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165622 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux kernel (SUSE-SA:2010:060)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (51953), SecurityFocus (BID 42589†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-27319†). Similar entries are available at VDB-55571, VDB-55569, VDB-55568 and VDB-55563. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
