This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-4180. No exploit is available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL (Network Encryption Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects some unknown processing of the component Session Identifier. This is going to have an impact on integrity. The summary by CVE is:
OpenSSL before 0.9.8q, and 1.0.x before 1.0.0c, when SSL_OP_NETSCAPE_REUSE_CIPHER_CHANGE_BUG is enabled, does not properly prevent modification of the ciphersuite in the session cache, which allows remote attackers to force the downgrade to an unintended cipher via vectors involving sniffing network traffic to discover a session identifier.
The weakness was published 12/03/2010 by Martin as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-4180. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67223 (SuSE 10 Security Update : libcurl4 (ZYPP Patch Number 8618)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216041 (VMWare ESXi 5.0.0 Patch ESXi500-Update02 Missing (KB2033751)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (67223), SecurityFocus (BID 45164†), OSVDB (69565†), SecurityTracker (ID 1024822†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28603†).
