OpenSSL up to 0.9.x improper authentication

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 0.9.x (Network Encryption Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

OpenSSL before 1.0.0c, when J-PAKE is enabled, does not properly validate the public parameters in the J-PAKE protocol, which allows remote attackers to bypass the need for knowledge of the shared secret, and successfully authenticate, by sending crafted values in each round of the protocol.

The weakness was released 12/06/2010 by Martin (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-4252. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56425 (GLSA-201110-01 : OpenSSL: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216041 (VMWare ESXi 5.0.0 Patch ESXi500-Update02 Missing (KB2033751)).

Upgrading to version 0.9.8o eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (56425), SecurityFocus (BID 45163†), SecurityTracker (ID 1024823†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28611†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-4291, VDB-4514, VDB-4515 and VDB-4518. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
