A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and 7 does not properly handle objects in memory, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by accessing an object that (1) was not properly initialized or (2) is deleted, leading to memory corruption, aka "HTML Object Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/22/2001. The weakness was disclosed 12/16/2010 as MS10-090 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-3340. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3555 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51162 (MS10-090: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2416400)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100094 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-090)).
Applying the patch MS10-090 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10703.
