A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7/8 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function CSharedStyleSheet::Notify in the library mshtml.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Use-after-free vulnerability in the CSharedStyleSheet::Notify function in the Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) parser in mshtml.dll, as used in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 through 8 and other products, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a self-referential @import rule in a stylesheet, aka "CSS Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was disclosed 12/22/2010 as MS11-003 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-3971. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
The exploit is available at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1022 days. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51903 (MS11-003: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2482017)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118888 (Microsoft Windows Shell Graphics Processing Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS11-006 and KB2490606)).
Applying the patch MS11-003 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10739.
