A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 (Web Browser). Affected is some unknown processing in the library IEShims.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a remote code execution vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-426. Untrusted search path vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 might allow local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse IEShims.dll in the current working directory, as demonstrated by a Desktop directory that contains an HTML file, aka "Internet Explorer Insecure Library Loading Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was disclosed 02/10/2011 as MS11-003 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-0038. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1574.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1072 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51903 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100096 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS11-003 and KB2488013)).
Applying the patch MS11-003 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11235.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (64914), Tenable (51903), SecurityFocus (BID 46159†), OSVDB (70833†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1025038†).
