Details
A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7/8 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, 7, and 8 does not properly handle objects in memory, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by accessing an object that (1) was not properly initialized or (2) is deleted, leading to memory corruption, relagted to a "dangling pointer," aka "Uninitialized Memory Corruption Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2010-2556 and CVE-2011-0035.
The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was released 02/10/2011 as MS11-003 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-0036. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1072 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51903 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100096 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS11-003 and KB2488013)).
