Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in hp Linux Imaging And Printing Project 3.10.9 (Printing Software). Affected is the function hpmud_get_pml of the component Printing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the hpmud_get_pml function in io/hpmud/pml.c in Hewlett-Packard Linux Imaging and Printing (HPLIP) 1.6.7, 3.9.8, 3.10.9, and probably other versions allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted SNMP response with a large length value.

The weakness was disclosed 01/17/2011 by Sebastian Krahmer as Bug 662740 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-4267. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 11/30/2024).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75525 (openSUSE Security Update : hplip (openSUSE-SU-2011:0068-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165187 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2011:005)).

A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (64738), Tenable (75525), SecurityFocus (BID 45833†), OSVDB (70498†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1024967†). The entries VDB-55634, VDB-55633, VDB-55627 and VDB-56204 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
