A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in PHP 5.3.5 (Programming Language Software). This issue affects the function grapheme_extract. The manipulation of the argument size with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The grapheme_extract function in the Internationalization extension (Intl) for ICU for PHP 5.3.5 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via an invalid size argument, which triggers a NULL pointer dereference.
The weakness was shared 02/18/2011 by Maksymilian Arciemowicz as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org.
