Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in IBM DB2 (Database Software). This affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the Java Stored Procedure infrastructure in IBM DB2 9.1 before FP12, 9.5 through FP9, 9.7 through FP6, 9.8 through FP5, and 10.1 allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code by leveraging certain CONNECT and EXECUTE privileges.
The weakness was released 07/13/2012 by Martin Rakhmanov with Application Security as swg21600837 as confirmed knowledge base article (IBM Knowledge Base). It is possible to read the advisory at www-01.ibm.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-2197 since 04/04/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/26/2021).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62369 (IBM DB2 10.1 < Fix Pack 1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19784 (IBM DB2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (IC84712, IC84748, IC84750 )).
Upgrading to version 10.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch IC84555 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at www-01.ibm.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (62369), SecurityFocus (BID 54487†), OSVDB (84047†), Secunia (SA49919†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-35761†).
