IBM DB2 10.1 UTL_File path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in IBM DB2 10.1 (Database Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component UTL_File Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in the UTL_FILE module in IBM DB2 and DB2 Connect 10.1 before FP1 on Windows allows remote authenticated users to modify, delete, or read arbitrary files via a pathname in the file field.

The weakness was shared 09/14/2012 as swg21611040 as confirmed bulletin (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at www-01.ibm.com. The vendor was not involved in the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-3324 since 06/07/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62369 (IBM DB2 10.1 < Fix Pack 1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19784 (IBM DB2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (IC84712, IC84748, IC84750 )).

Upgrading to version 10.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch V10.1 FP1 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at www-01.ibm.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (77924), Tenable (62369), SecurityFocus (BID 55720†), OSVDB (85787†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-38283†). The entries VDB-5688, VDB-5689, VDB-5691 and VDB-61784 are related to this item. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
