The epoll implementation in the Linux kernel 2.6.37.2 and earlier does not properly traverse a tree of epoll file descriptors, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via a crafted application that makes epoll_create and epoll_ctl system calls.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was presented 04/04/2011 as Bug 681578 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-1083. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation.
