Details
A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function snoop_read. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The snoop_read function in wiretap/snoop.c in Wireshark 1.2.x before 1.2.17 and 1.4.x before 1.4.7 does not properly handle certain virtualizable buffers, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a large length value in a snoop file that triggers a stack-based buffer over-read.
The weakness was disclosed 06/06/2011 by Huzaifa Sidhpurwala as Bug 710039 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-1959. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58849 (CentOS 6 : wireshark (CESA-2012:0509)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120942 (CentOS Security Update for Wireshark (CESA-2013:0125)).
Upgrading to version 1.2.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (67792), Tenable (58849), SecurityFocus (BID 48066†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-31687†).
