Wireshark up to 1.4.6 null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

Wireshark 1.2.x before 1.2.17 and 1.4.x before 1.4.7 allows user-assisted remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and application crash) via a crafted Diameter dictionary file.

The weakness was released 06/06/2011 by Huzaifa Sidhpurwala as Bug 710184 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-1958. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68696 (Oracle Linux 5 : wireshark (ELSA-2013-0125)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120942 (CentOS Security Update for Wireshark (CESA-2013:0125)).

Upgrading to version 1.2.2 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (67791), Tenable (68696), SecurityFocus (BID 48066†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-31686†).
