A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Symantec Web Gateway up to 5.0.3 (Firewall Software). This affects an unknown code block of the file spywall/blocked.php. The manipulation of the argument id with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. SQL injection vulnerability in the management console in Symantec Web Gateway 5.0.x before 5.0.3.18 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands via unspecified vectors, related to a "blind SQL injection" issue.
The weakness was disclosed 07/20/2012 by muts with Offensive Security as SYM12-011 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at symantec.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Symantec. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-2574 since 05/09/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1505 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by muts and been published 3 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 25 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:spywall/blocked.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12663 (Symantec Web Gateway Multiple Security Issues (SYM12-011)).
Upgrading to version 5.0.0.438 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12787.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (77112), Exploit-DB (20038), SecurityFocus (BID 54424†), OSVDB (84118†) and Secunia (SA50031†). The entries VDB-5788, VDB-5789, VDB-5790 and VDB-5791 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
