The management console in Symantec Web Gateway 5.0.x before 5.0.3.18 allows local users to gain privileges by modifying files, related to a "file inclusion" issue.
The weakness was presented 07/20/2012 by muts with Offensive Security & Tenable Network Security as SYM12-011 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at symantec.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-2957 since 05/30/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
A public exploit has been developed by muts and been published 4 days after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 25 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:spywall/languageTest.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61435 (Symantec Web Gateway Multiple Script Shell Command Execution (SYM12-011)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12663 (Symantec Web Gateway Multiple Security Issues (SYM12-011)).
Upgrading to version 5.0.0.438 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
