Opera before 12.01 on Windows and UNIX, and before 11.66 and 12.x before 12.01 on Mac OS X, does not properly escape characters in DOM elements, which makes it easier for remote attackers to bypass cross-site scripting (XSS) protection mechanisms via a crafted HTML document.
The weakness was released 08/02/2012 by Andrey Stroganov as 1025 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at opera.com. The public release was coordinated with Opera. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-4144 since 08/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62301 (GLSA-201209-11 : Opera: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 12.01 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
