JRuby up to 1.6.5 input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in JRuby. This impacts an unknown function. The manipulation leads to input validation. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-4838. There is no exploit available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in JRuby (Programming Language Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

JRuby before 1.6.5.1 computes hash values without restricting the ability to trigger hash collisions predictably, which allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via crafted input to an application that maintains a hash table.

The weakness was shared 12/29/2011 by Alexander Klink with n.runs AG as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-4838 since 12/15/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83142 (Debian DLA-209-1 : jruby security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 1.3.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11994.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (72019), Tenable (83142), SecurityFocus (BID 51233†), Secunia (SA47407†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-35595†). The entries VDB-59888, VDB-59852, VDB-59851 and VDB-59850 are related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
