Details
A vulnerability was found in Ruby 1.8.7-p299/1.8.7-p302/1.8.7-p330/1.8.7-p334/1.8.7-p352 (Programming Language Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Ruby (aka CRuby) before 1.8.7-p357 computes hash values without restricting the ability to trigger hash collisions predictably, which allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via crafted input to an application that maintains a hash table.
The weakness was presented 12/29/2011 by Alexander Klink with n.runs AG as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-4815 since 12/14/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68440 (Oracle Linux 6 : ruby (ELSA-2012-0069)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120902 (Solaris 11 Support Repository Update (SRU) 6.6 Missing).
Upgrading to version 1.8.7-p299 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11994.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (72020), Tenable (68440), SecurityFocus (BID 51198†), Secunia (SA47822†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1026474†). See VDB-4549, VDB-4791, VDB-5404 and VDB-5409 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
