Apple QuickTime up to 7.7.1 File memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Apple QuickTime up to 7.7.1 (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown function. The manipulation as part of a File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer underflow in QuickTime in Apple Mac OS X before 10.7.4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted MPEG file.

The weakness was shared 05/15/2012 by Justin Kim (Paul) with Microsoft Vulnerability Research as APPLE-SA-2012-05-15-1 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.apple.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0660 since 01/12/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59066 (Mac OS X 10.7.x < 10.7.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (BEAST)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120221 (Apple QuickTime Prior to 7.7.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-05-15-1)).

Upgrading to version 7.7.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (75491), Tenable (59066), SecurityFocus (BID 53445†), OSVDB (81932†) and Secunia (SA47447†). The entries VDB-4791, VDB-5399, VDB-5408 and VDB-5409 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
