Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apple QuickTime up to 7.7.1 (Multimedia Player Software). This affects an unknown code block. The manipulation as part of a File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in QuickTime in Apple Mac OS X before 10.7.4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via crafted audio sample tables in a movie file that is progressively downloaded.
The weakness was shared 05/15/2012 by Luigi Auriemma (Paul) with Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) as APPLE-SA-2012-05-15-1 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.apple.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-0658 since 01/12/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59066 (Mac OS X 10.7.x < 10.7.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (BEAST)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120221 (Apple QuickTime Prior to 7.7.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-05-15-1)).
Upgrading to version 7.7.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (75489), Tenable (59066), SecurityFocus (BID 53445†), OSVDB (81930†) and Secunia (SA47447†).
