Apache Geronimo up to 2.2.1 input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apache Geronimo up to 2.2.1. Affected is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

Apache Geronimo 2.2.1 and earlier computes hash values for form parameters without restricting the ability to trigger hash collisions predictably, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) by sending many crafted parameters. NOTE: this might overlap CVE-2011-4461.

The weakness was published 12/29/2011 by Alexander Klink with n.runs AG as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-5034 since 12/29/2011. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Christian Mehlmauer and been published 5 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12676 (Apache Geronimo Web Form Hash Collision Denial of Service Vulnerability).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12109.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (72047), Exploit-DB (18305), SecurityFocus (BID 51238†), Secunia (SA47412†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-39511†). Similar entries are available at VDB-4557, VDB-5200, VDB-7354 and VDB-60221. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
