ImageMagick up to 6.5.3-5 Profiles profile.c SyncImageProfiles memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick up to 6.5.3-5 (Image Processing Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function SyncImageProfiles of the file profile.c of the component Profiles. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer overflow in the SyncImageProfiles function in profile.c in ImageMagick 6.7.5-8 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via crafted IOP tag offsets in the IFD in an image. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2012-0248.

The weakness was released 06/05/2012 by Aleksis Kauppinen (Website). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-1186 since 02/14/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58908 (Debian DSA-2462-2 : imagemagick - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165490 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for ImageMagick (SUSE-SU-2012:0763-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12209.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (76139), Tenable (58908), SecurityFocus (BID 51957†), OSVDB (80555†) and Secunia (SA47926†).
