Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in MediaWiki 1.18.4/1.19.1 (Content Management System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Local Database External Authentication Plugin. The manipulation as part of a LDAP Query leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality.

The weakness was published 08/31/2012 by Ryan Lane (Fomafix) with MediaWiki as Bug 39184 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.wikimedia.org. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-4381 since 08/21/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592. During internal review, it was discovered that password data was always saved to the local MediaWiki database, even if authentication was handled by an extension, such as LDAP. This could allow a compromised MediaWiki installation to leak information about user's LDAP passwords. Additionally, in situations when an authentication plugin returned false in ist strict function, this would allow old passwords to be used for accounts that did not exist in the external system, indefinitely.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61765 (FreeBSD : mediawiki -- multiple vulnerabilities (7c0fecd6-f42f-11e1-b17b-000c2977ec30)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 1.18.5 or 1.19.2 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at download.wikimedia.org. Applying the patch Patch Attachment 10944 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at bugzilla.wikimedia.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (61765), SecurityFocus (BID 55370†), OSVDB (85106†), Secunia (SA50477†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-36330†). Additional details are provided at openwall.com. Similar entries are available at VDB-6086, VDB-6088, VDB-6097 and VDB-6098. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
