Linux Kernel up to 2.6.38.8 rose_parse_national memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.38.8 and classified as critical. Affected is the function rose_parse_national. Performing a manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2011-1493. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.38.8 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function rose_parse_national. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Array index error in the rose_parse_national function in net/rose/rose_subr.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.39 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption) or possibly have unspecified other impact by composing FAC_NATIONAL_DIGIS data that specifies a large number of digipeaters, and then sending this data to a ROSE socket.

The issue has been introduced in 03/14/2011. The weakness was released 06/21/2012 by Dan Rosenberg (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-1493 since 03/21/2011. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/05/2021).

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 465 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68426 (Oracle Linux 5 / 6 : Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2011-2038)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165558 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2011:019)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (68426), SecurityFocus (BID 46935†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-44338†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-4261, VDB-4416, VDB-4544 and VDB-55715. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
