A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.28.10 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function encode_share_access. The encode_share_access function in fs/nfs/nfs4xdr.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.29 allows local users to cause a denial of service (BUG and system crash) by using the mknod system call with a pathname on an NFSv4 filesystem.
The issue has been introduced in 12/25/2008. The weakness was disclosed 06/21/2012 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-4324 since 11/04/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1274 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57485 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2012:0007)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
