Details
A vulnerability was found in XnView 1.98.8 (Image Processing Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple heap-based buffer overflows in XnView before 1.99 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a (1) SGI32LogLum compressed TIFF image or (2) SGI32LogLum compressed TIFF image with the PhotometricInterpretation encoding set to LogL.
The weakness was presented 07/17/2012 by Francis Provencher (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at protekresearchlab.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-0276 since 12/30/2011. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Francis Provencher and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59606 (XnView < 1.99.0 Multiple Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.
Upgrading to version 1.98.8 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (76506), Exploit-DB (19338), Tenable (59606), SecurityFocus (BID 54030†) and OSVDB (83082†).
