Details
A vulnerability was found in XnView 1.98.8 (Image Processing Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in XnView before 1.99 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted ImageLeftPosition value in an ImageDescriptor structure in a GIF image.
The weakness was published 07/17/2012 by Francis Provencher (Website). The advisory is shared at protekresearchlab.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0282 since 12/30/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Francis Provencher and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 25 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59606 (XnView < 1.99.0 Multiple Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.
Upgrading to version 1.98.8 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (76508), Exploit-DB (19335), Tenable (59606), SecurityFocus (BID 54125†) and OSVDB (83086†).
