Moodle 2.3.x before 2.3.1 uses only a client-side check for whether references are permitted in a file upload, which allows remote authenticated users to bypass intended alias (aka shortcut) restrictions via a client that omits this check.

The weakness was presented 07/23/2012 by Daniel Compton (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-3387 since 06/14/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication.
