A vulnerability classified as critical was found in FFmpeg up to 0.8.10 (Multimedia Processing Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the file nsvdec.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. nsvdec.c in libavcodec in FFmpeg 0.7.x before 0.7.12 and 0.8.x before 0.8.11, and in Libav 0.5.x before 0.5.9, 0.6.x before 0.6.6, 0.7.x before 0.7.5, and 0.8.x before 0.8.1, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and write) via a crafted NSV file that triggers "use of uninitialized streams."
The issue has been introduced in 06/23/2011. The weakness was released 08/20/2012 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.videolan.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-3940 since 10/01/2011. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
