The wikitext parser in MediaWiki 1.17.x before 1.17.3 and 1.18.x before 1.18.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via certain input, as demonstrated by the padleft function.
The weakness was released 09/09/2012 by Brion Vibber (Bawolff) as Bug 35315 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.wikimedia.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-4885 since 09/09/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
