Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as critical has been discovered in Linux Kernel 3.1. This affects the function udf_load_logicalvol. The manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2012-3400. No exploit exists. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Linux Kernel 3.1 (Operating System). Affected is the function udf_load_logicalvol. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the udf_load_logicalvol function in fs/udf/super.c in the Linux kernel before 3.4.5 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (system crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted UDF filesystem.

The weakness was disclosed 10/03/2012 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-3400 since 06/14/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 12/14/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68772 (Oracle Linux 5 : kernel (ELSA-2013-0594-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165525 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2012:0904-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (68772), SecurityFocus (BID 54279†), Secunia (SA50506†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-51147†). The entries VDB-5383, VDB-5478, VDB-60962 and VDB-60961 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
