A vulnerability classified as critical was found in ISC INN. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The STARTTLS implementation in nnrpd in INN before 2.5.3 does not properly restrict I/O buffering, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to insert commands into encrypted sessions by sending a cleartext command that is processed after TLS is in place, related to a "plaintext command injection" attack, a similar issue to CVE-2011-0411.
The weakness was presented 11/11/2012 by Wietse Venema (Website). The advisory is shared at mandriva.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-3523 since 06/14/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72079 (GLSA-201401-24 : INN: Man-in-the-middle attack), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165380 (SUSE Security Update for inn (openSUSE-SU-2012:1171-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
